Pops and Me in the Zion Narrows - a photo on Flickriver

            My dad, who turns 71 in a few months, has wanted to hike the Virgin River through the Zion Narrows for some time now. The opportunity to go with him and share the experience was WAY to good an opportunity to pass by so off we went, along with ancient family friends Big Bob and Little Bob Ward (and again more on that later).

The Narrows is many miles long and is typically two long days of hiking from top to bottom. In the spring, when the river flow is high, you spent quite a bit of time hiking in and criss-crossing the river itself. While we had a permit for last Thursday and Friday, the river flow was still too fast and the Narrows were closed to all. The last day in the park for me was Saturday - and good luck was with us as the Narrows opened up from the bottom for day hikers.

The four of us set off up-river for about 2.5 hours and reached this gorgeous spot about halfway between the Temple of Sinawava and Orderville Canyon. The water temperature was a chilly 48 degrees and the sun was a rare visitor down at the bottom of the canyons so we were, needless to say, a little numb. The flow - which was down to 131 CFS that morning - was still very powerful in places. We had to cross the river 14 times to get where we did - sometimes in water that was almost chest-deep. And man - did if feel good to get it done. We all had a blast and my old man kicked ass. A day later I can almost feel my feet again but what an experience. What a place.
