Adirondack Chairs, Ford Plantation - a photo on Flickriver

Ford Plantation, located in Richmond Hill, Georgia is a development centered around the plantation lands purchased by Henry Ford in the 1920's for use as a vacation home and agricultural experiment with help from friends like Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone. Ford's investment in the land and surrounding area, brought a modicum of prosperity to impoverished Bryan County, not seen since Sherman's March to the Sea. Ford gathered properties from several neighboring plantations to create Ford Plantation. After using the Cherry Hill house for years, the Ford's decided to build a larger more grand house, named the Richmond Hill House, or just the "Main House". The Ford's modeled the new "Main House" after the 1820'2 plantation known as "The Hermitage" which was noted for it's distictive Savannah grey bricks. Henry Ford purchased The Hermitage and despite local opposition, demolished it in order to use the bricks for the new Richmond Hill house. After Henry and Clara Ford's passing, the house and it's lands were sold to a New England industrialist and saw later use as a retaurant and eventually as a hay storage building. In the late 1990's, the house and lands were developed into a planned residence and recreation development featuring golf, horseback riding and boating.

The Ford Plantation development has gone to great lengths and expense to preserve much of the natural habitat found on the former plantation lands.
