Monkfish Stew Hot Pot (Ankou Nabe) With Ojiya (Rice Gruel Seasoned With Stock And Egg)

Huh? I am trying a hot pot ?!?
I am quite famous among my friends for my dislike of the hot pot.
First they make me perspire, which I do not enjoy while eating and secondly, plenty of times, I have to cook my own food (which I can do without paying someone to).

Despite the sweats....I did enjoy this meal a lot and was one of the culinary highlights of my trip.
A mate at work shared that this was a common-man traditional Japanese dish from Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture and is a staple winter food of the prefecture. It is a luxurious pot made of various parts of the monkfish, including ankimo or it's liver, miso, vegetables, etc - truly a celebration of the flavours of this anglerfish.

I was a little skeptical when I started even though the ugly monkfish today is celebrated in the Michelin Star world, as the fish closest equivalent of the lobster in terms of texture and taste. The kind hearted staff helped to cook the dish in front of me, several times, halting my impatience. It was only when the pot was deemed rightfully cooked that I was invited to enjoy. My skepticism melted away (literally....grin) with each mouthful....as the morsels of resplendent monkfish flesh, liver, roe, milt etc disappeared down my throat with guttural approvals as the staff stole peeks at myself. I didn't quite stop once I started....as it was so moreish! It was only when I gulped down the last bit of fish, vegetable and rice and I flashed a super wide grin at the staff that they knew they has a very satisfied customer!

The piece de resistance to cap off the meal? Nothing is wasted. Add rice and egg into excess broth, bring to boil as gruel and serve generously sprinkled with chopped spring onions for a finishing tasty flourish.
