Kattumaram (outrigger boat) moored in Hamilton Canal in Negombo

            Hamilton Canal was constructed by the British in 1804 to transport goods to and from Negombo port. It is part of a canal system that once connected Puttalam to the north and Colombo to the south. There used to be a partly artificial waterway before the European arrivals, which was enhanced by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. It is possible to navigate by small boats from Maha Oya river in the north of Negombo to Colombo by way of Negombo lagoon.

Outrigger boat is an influence of Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) people on the coastal areas of Indian Ocean. It is called Kattumaram in Tamil language, which became catamaran in English. The traditional boats in the photo are probably moored for display to tourists.
