Ant nest in the Aikawa Mine - a photo on Flickriver

            Old mining shafts installed with life-size dolls of miners in the costumes of the Edo period. Some of the dolls move while speaking some phrases.
Aikawa Gold and Silver Mine was converted to a museum after its closure in 1989.

Gold in Japan was cheaper against silver than the international standard during the Edo period. I suppose it was a consequence of the relative preference for silver, or the relative abundance of gold, in Japan.

Dutch merchants purchased gold in Nagasaki, which was transported to Shanghai, one day distance from Nagasaki, to purchase silver. The silver purchased in Shanghai was transported to Nagasaki to purchase gold, and the gold was transported to Shanghai to purchase silver…(^_^:)
They could earn a huge profit by simply plying between the two port cities.
