THE RIVER DARWEN RUNS OVER THREE WEIRS IN THE SPACE OF TWO MILES FIRST ONE AT HOGHTON BOTTOMS, THE SECOND AT SAMLESBURY BOTTOMS  AND THIRD AT ROACH BRIDGE FURTHER DOWNSTREAM. THE WEIR AT SAMLESBURY BOTTOMS WAS BUILT TO SUPPLY POWER TO THE SMALL WATER DRIVEN SPINNING FACTORY, A COTTON MILL RUN BY 'SMITH, SLATER AND CO. COTTON TWISTERS AT SAMLESBURY BOTTOMS IN 1784.
