Danthonia unispicata - a photo on Flickriver

            Onespike danthonia (Danthonia unispicata), Grass family (Poaceae).
Albion Basin, Alta, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah; elevation 3042 m.

What a strange grass! I tried to find some dried inflorescence and did not see any. Then, I noticed that the base of each leaf is slightly buldging. And indeed, when I pooled out the leaves, at the base of each sheath I found a single spikelet completely wrapped around and hidden inside the sheath. I do not think it ever sees the light and could be just self-fertilized inside this wrap. I did not find any glumes. Two tiny scales are more like abortive florets. Between the seed and the lemma were two very small stamens. Palea is attached to the short rachilla.
