Allora & Calzadilla: Contract (SWMU-2-2), 2015

            The project "Contracts" catalogs sites in Vieques, Puerto Rico where palm trees stand as natural markers for hazardous dumping grounds created by the US military. Ironically, area is currently managed by the US Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service as “Conservation Zones.” The acronym SWMU in the title stands for “Solid Waste Management Unit.”

In Contracts, what seem to be conventional pictures of a beautiful destination are disrupted by layers of black ink, shrouding the idyll partly or completely. The series of screen-prints document a sequestered landscape, but also comment on the veil of bureaucratic language and process to which people and places fall victim. 

Jennifer Allora (born 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (born 1971) are a collaborative duo of visual artists who live and work in San Juan.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico opened in 2000. The main building was designed by the architect William H. Shimmelphening and constructed in 1920. It housed the San Juan Municipal Hospital until 1966 and offices after that. Starting in 1995, the building was redesigned, with a large addition for exhibit space.
