Ilha de Moçambique: Jardim de Memória

            The Jardim de Memória (Slavery Memorial Garden) was established in 2007 in the ruins of an old warehouse on Mozambique Island to commemorate the slave trade in Mozambique. Slaves were kept in warehouses like this one before being shipped to their destinations. The center of the memorial represents a slave ship, surrounded by a dozen stylized statues of slaves. The gate mimics the gates of no return of  the West African slave castles.

Until the 17th century, the northern coast of Mozambique was under strong Arabic influence, and the slave trade flourished both under the Arabs and the Portuguese who settled on the island in the early 16th century. In the 18th century, slaves were increasingly traded across the Atlantic to Brazil, Cuba, North America, but also to French sugar and coffee plantations on some of the Indian Ocean islands. Mozambique’s secret slave trade continued until the early 20th century, providing enslaved Africans to the island São Tomé, to French plantations in the Indian Ocean or to the old Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) or South African mines.
