Poppies was about the only place in Kuta where you could be served a sit down meal.  It had the ambiance of a tropical beer garden and after much experience of the Palm Beach Hotel beer garden we Queenslanders felt oddly at home there.  Rickety overhead shade, cheap ferns and rainforest plants and endless rounds of beer were the points of intersection.  Poppies was nowhere near as hot as the Palm Beach beer garden however.  It had better air movement and for some reason the temperature in southern Bali seemed not to climb as high as that southeast Queensland.

Poppies served the toughest beef (water buffalo I suspect) and warmest beer (saved on refrigeration).  A request for cold beer saw ice cubes dropped into the glass.  We drank it warm after that.
