Komkommerkruid ( Bernagie) (Borago officinalis)

De bernagie (Borago officinalis), ook vaak komkommerkruid genoemd, is een gemakkelijk herkenbare, ruwharige, eenjarige plant met blauwe bloemen.

Borago zou van het Italiaanse “borra” komen wat “wol” betekent, verwijzend naar de dikke, grijze en korte beharing van de plant. De Romeinse Plinius schreef over deze plant ”ego Borago Daudia semper” wat vrij vertaald “ik borago breng altijd moed” betekent.

De soortaanduiding officinalis geeft aan dat aan de plant geneeskundige werking werd toegeschreven. Reeds bij de Grieken stond de plant om zijn opbeurende werking bekend. In de tweede eeuw na Christus werd een mengsel van bernagie en honing gebruikt ter verlichting bij hoesten. Een aftreksel van de bladeren en stengels werd gebruikt om de diurese en het zweten te bevorderen. Ander traditioneel gebruik is de toepassing bij reuma, verkoudheid en bronchitis

De plant wordt toegepast ter versterking van de bijnieren en tegen mentale uitputting en depressie. Verder zou het de maag en darmen ondersteunen bij infectie en vergiftiging. De zaden worden ingezet bij prikkelbaredarmsyndroom en bij onregelmatige menstruatie. De zaadolie vindt uitwendig toepassing bij seborroïsch en atopisch eczeem en inwendig bij premenstrueel syndroom en ter preventie van hart- en vaatziekten.

Bernagie bevat een hoog gehalte aan vitamine C , zink, magnesium, vitamine B6 en biotine. De bloemen zijn rijk aan choline, glucose, fructose, aminozuren en tanninen. De zaden bevatten vooral proteïnen en een olie  die rijk is aan gamma-linoleenzuur GLA Als een van de voornaamste natuurlijke bronnen van GLA heeft borage-olie een grote vlucht genomen in de voedingssupplementenindustrie.

Als voedsel wordt de plant vooral in het Middellandse Zeegebied gewaardeerd als onderdeel van salades en andere zomerse gerechten. Ze heeft een komkommerachtige smaak, de naam komkommerkruid heeft ze hieraan te danken. Behalve de bloemen worden ook de jonge blaadjes als sla of als spinazie gegeten. Ten slotte kunnen de bloemen gebruikt worden om azijn blauw te kleuren.In India wordt een siroop gemaakt van de plant, die in de zomer als verfrissing wordt verkocht.

The borage (Borago officinalis), also often called borage is an easily recognizable, shaggy, annual plant with blue flowers.

Borago would the Italian "borra" get some "wool", referring to the thick, gray and short hair of the plant. The Roman Pliny wrote about this plant "ego Starflower Daudia semper" which loosely translated "I Borago always bring courage" means.

The specific name officinalis indicates that was attributed to the phyto-sanitary operation. Already the Greeks allowed the plant to be comforting effect known. In the second century a mixture of borage and honey was used AD to relieve coughing. An infusion of the leaves and stems was used to promote diuresis and sweating. Another traditional use is the application for rheumatism, colds and bronchitis

The plant is used to strengthen the adrenals and against mental exhaustion and depression. Further, it would support the stomach and intestines in infection and poisoning. The seeds are used for irritable bowel syndrome and irregular menstruation. The seed oil is externally applied to seborrheic and atopic eczema, and internally with premenstrual syndrome, and for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
