Alberto Giacometti (Borgonovo, 10 oktober 1901 - Chur, 11 januari 1966) was een Zwitserse beeldhouwer en schilder.

Alberto Giacometti is vooral bekend en geliefd vanwege zijn lange, dunne mensfiguren in brons. Naar eigen zeggen laat hij zich in deze serie beelden uit de jaren 1945-1960 leiden door de indrukken die hij opdoet van de zich haastende mensen in de grote stad. Hij is gefascineerd door de mens in beweging, die hij ziet als ‘een opeenvolging van momenten van stilstand.

De Lopende man  heeft nauwelijks volume. Alles aan hem is ijl en gereduceerd, niet alleen de extreem dunne romp, armen en benen, maar ook het uiterst kleine hoofd. De gebalde handen en de vreemde klompvoeten, die lijken vast te kleven aan de grond, zijn in vergelijking met de rest van de figuur abnormaal groot. De man helt voorover, op weg naar een onbekend doel.

Alberto Giacometti is best known and loved for his long, thin human figures in bronze. In his own words, in this series he shows images from the years 1945-1960 through the impressions he gains from the rushing people in the big city. He is fascinated by man in motion, which he sees as' a succession of moments of stagnation.

The Running man hardly has any volume. Everything about him is thin and reduced, not only the extremely thin trunk, arms and legs, but also the tiny head. The clenched hands and the strange clubfeet, which seem to stick to the ground, are abnormally large compared to the rest of the figure. The man leans forward, on the way to an unknown goal.
