De benedictijnse abdij van Melk werd in 1089 gesticht in een kasteel, dat markgraaf Leopold II aan de Benedictijnen geschonken had.

De rots waarop de abdij staat, met uitzicht op de Donau, was waarschijnlijk al in de Romeinse tijd bewoond. In de tiende eeuw stond er een kasteel van een Beierse graaf.

De abdij is een van de markante punten binnen het cultuurlandschap Wachau dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat

The Benedictine Abbey of Melk was founded in 1089 in a castle that Margrave Leopold II had given to the Benedictines.

The rock on which the abbey stands, overlooking the Danube, was probably already inhabited in Roman times. In the tenth century there was a castle of a Bavarian count.

The abbey is one of the most striking points in the Wachau cultural landscape, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
