Glamour of LA / Cerritos / Artesia / Future Transit Hub - Back to the Past?

            Weed choked former Pacific Electric right of way on the Cerritos / Artesia border about 20 miles southeast of Downtown LA. When in use, many decades ago, the surrounding area was largely dairy farms, Now a suburban area with a large Asian population.

Announced as the probable southern terminal for the West Santa Ana Branch light rail project to Downtown LA, largely through densely populated / industrial areas (Cudahy, Vernon, South Gate). Groundbreaking no earlier than 2022.  The right of way south of I-105 is still intact and owned by the transit agency - no alternatives are being discussed here. North of I-105 several "options" are still on the table.

Subway construction in LA is currently in the billion dollar per mile range. Acquiring a new surface route is politically unfeasible. Re-use of existing rights of way is more practical but still the subject of controversy by the neighbors, especially in residential districts. 

Work is currently underway to restore service to the outermost portion of the line between Garden Grove and Santa Ana in Orange County. Part of the right of way in "downtown" Garden Grove is currently occupied by parking lots and a few buildings - leaving a gap with no announced plans.

Added September 2017: the weeds are gone (as is a small homeless encampment). Maybe work is getting underway. Former First Lady Pat Nixon's childhood home is a few blocks to the east.
