Interior of Turret, USS Monitor *Explored* 2023

Replica: Interior of USS Monitor's turret as it was recovered at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, made by Disney.

The original turret and other recovered items are in the water tank for desalination process.   When the turret was recovered, there were two human remains inside.  They were buried at the Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

USS Monitor:  
The first ironclad warship commissioned by the US Union Navy during the American Civil War.    Played a central role in the Battle of Hampton Roads to fight against the CSS Virginia, Confederate ironclad warship on Mar. 9, 1862.

Sank at sea with 16 men on stormy, Dec. 31, 1862.  Discovered in 1973.    Gun turret, cast iron propeller, and more than 250 artifacts have been recovered.
