The Cat & Fiddle windmill - a photo on Flickriver

            This windmill, also know as Dale Abbey windmill, is a Grade II listed  timber framed rectangular mill. 

It dates from c1788. It was originally built as an open trestle post mill by the 3rd Earl of Stanhope. In 1830 it was sold by the then owner and in 1844 was converted into a Midlands type mill – 1 of only 3 remaining in the UK. At this time the brick roundhouse underneath was added to provide storage. 

In 1912 the mill was purchased by Stanton Iron Works Co Ltd and for many years was maintained by them. It ceased commercial operation in 1952, but the occupant kept the sails turning until 1982 when she retired. It was then sold in 1982 by British Steel Corporation to private buyers, together with the adjacent mill cottage. 

It suffered considerable damage from strong winds in 1987 and 1995, but both times was repaired. Outbuildings on site have now been converted to a café.

The origin of the name “Cat and Fiddle”  is not known
