Ruff in dress suit

My three months travel in spring through the Netherlands was mostly to find birds and preferently birds I never had seen or in a different shape compared to normal. And further I wanted to see some nature areas in the north, and later in June in the south.

One of my wishes was to see a ruff in his courtship uniform, and here you can see one. There was not really any courtship behaviour, main goal for all the ruffs (and there were thousands of them in the Lauwerslake) was to eat as much as they could. All day they were just foraging the beach and the shallow water (and only sometimes they showed a beginning of macho exhibitionism). This male was almost at its best,and it left me with a question whether fashion in the 16th century was influenced by this lovely bird (see for what I mean this image upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/06/Voorbeeld_van...).
