Carcassonne Castle, Languedoc, by night

            Carcassonne is in southwestern France, about 80 km east of Toulouse. Its strategic location between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean has been appreciated since the Neolithic era, and was quickly recognised by the Romans, who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire. In the fifth century, it was taken over by the Visigoths.
The castle is known as the Cité de Carcassonne.  It is a mediaeval fortress dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, and was restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. 
The first signs of settlement in this region have been dated to about 3500 BC, but the hill site of Carsac – a Celtic place-name – became an important trading place as early as the 6th century BC.  In the Middle Ages the city became a centre of Catharism, an alternative form of Christianity. In 1209 it was besieged by the crusading army of Abbot Amalric and after its surrender, its citizens were expelled.  -- adapted from Wikipedia.
