The Saarland State Theatre shows at the State Theatre and the Old Fire Station pieces from the fields of music theater, drama, dance theater and concerts as well as - since the season 2006/2007 in the new "sparte4" - also cabaret, performances and experimental theater.
The building
The Staatstheater in Saarbrücken was built in 1937 and 1938 according to plans by Paul Baumgarten August Otto in the neoclassical style. Officially it was the Saarland for the vote in 1935 "given" by the then Nazi government, by which the Saarland had opted for annexation to the German Reich, a large part but having to be financed of the city of Saarbrücken then. The building by the will of those in power should serve as a "bulwark" against France at the border of the German Reich.
The building due to arson attacks and bombing burned down in the Second World War several times, but was restored each time. Due to the proximity to the Saar, there was also water damage caused by flooding.
History
The Saarland State Theater was founded in 1938 by Adolf Hitler as "Gautheater Saar Palatinate" (also "Westgautheater" or "Grenzlandtheater Saarbrücken" called) with the piece The Flying Dutchman opened. After its destruction in 1942, it was rebuilt after the Second World War under French occupation and resumed as Stadttheater Saarbrücken operations. After the final reintegration of the Saarland to the Federal Republic in 1959, it flourished under its then director Hermann Wedekind. Wedekind showed in his tenure (1960-1975) under the motto "Art knows no boundaries" pieces of foreign artists, especially from France and Georgia. From a "Georgian week" on - now - Staatstheater the twinning between Tbilisi and Saarbrücken originated.
1988 the State took over the entire ownership, and Martin Peleikis, general director since 1975, became a founding director of the planned State Theater GmbH. A year later, in 1989, the legal form of the State Theatre was changed to "Saarland State Theater GmbH" and taken over the Saarland State Theatre by the State Theater GmbH. From 1991 to 2006, the Swiss actor and director Kurt Josef Schildknecht was General Director as well as Managing Director of the Saarland State Theatre, which under his leadership was able to catch up with the ranks of the major German-speaking houses. In 2006 he left the theater after a long-lasting dispute with the then Saarland Minister of Education Jürgen Schreier about budget cuts.
His was succeeded from the season 2006/2007 by Dagmar Schlingmann, whose contract runs until 2019. In the season 2006/2007 under Dagmar Schlingmann yet a fourth division was added (to acting, musical theater, ballet), namely the "sparte4", which has found its venue in the Rail road (Eisenbahnstraße). It is to serve the skill of young directors and writers as a platform. Her repertoire includes, among other things, performance installations, experimental theater plays, readings and concerts of alternative musicians. The artistic leadership of the sparte4 behoves the director Christoph Diem.
Also since the 2006/2007 season there is at the Saarland State Theater a youth club (U21), under the direction of Jörg Wesemüller. Here, interested young people aged 12 to 21 can play theater free of charge under professional supervision. At the end of each year then in the Old Fire Station four performances figure on the programme. 2006/2007 the novel They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (nur Pferden gibt man den Gnadenschuss) of Horace McCoy was adapted for the stage. 2007/2008 they devoted themselves to the history of Macbeth by William Shakespeare and bundled it into a fight and a role play of a youth group. In the season 2008/2009 the youth club devoted itself to Frank Wedekind's "Spring Awakening" and developed - together with the newly founded Seniors Club "The RauReifen" - a drama about the longings of adolescents. With "over come" "U21" 2009/2010 was celebrating success beyond the borders of the Saarland. The Youth Club was selected from over 40 youth club productions in Germany and invited with six other productions in June 2010 to the Leipzig Central Theater.
Operas at the Saarland State Theater are backed up by The Saarland State Orchestra, which during its history was presided by conductors such as Siegfried Köhler, Christof Prick, Jiří Kout, Jun Märkl and Laurent Wagner. With the start of the 2009-10 season, Toshiyuki Kamioka assumed the post of music director and principal conductor. Since the beginning of the season 2012/2013 Brigitte Heusinger is an opera director, who succeeded Berthold Schneider (2006-2012) in this function. With the beginning of the season 2014/15 Stijn Celis will be ballet director at the Saarland State Theater; he succeeds Marguerite Donlon, who occupied this position from 2001 to 2013.
