Port Adelaide "Nelcebee'' aka 'Nellie', built 1883 in Scotland and now on land at Wharf 13. South Australia

            ‘Nelcebee’ was built in 1883 by Thomas Seath at Rutherglen, Scotland at a cost of £7,000. After testing it was shipped to South Australia where it was reassembled by Thomas Cruickshank in Port Adelaide and commenced service as a tug and lighter at Port Pirie. 

In 1927 the vessel was sold, refitted with a diesel engine and given two masts. In 1928 it commenced operations in the South Australian coastal trade serving Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent ports, carrying loads such as wheat, gypsum and minerals.

After ‘Nellie’ (as she was fondly known) was sold to R Fricker and Company in 1962 she commenced working to supply Kangaroo Island until retirement in 1982.

‘Nelcebee’ was the one of the last two ketches operating in the south Australian coastal trade along with the ‘Falie’. Today it is the only 19th century steamship in Australia.

Decommissioned in 1982 and now held by the South Australian Maritime Museum, ‘Nelcebee’ is now on dry land located at Wharf 13, Dock Two. 

Dock Two, where the Clipper Ship ‘City of Adelaide’ is also located, is set to become an historical maritime precinct.
