            The stone for this building was laid on 24 July 1939 by the Mayor Ralph Wright, Esq JP.

*New Council Offices for Port Adelaide
With the completion of its new building in December, the Port Adelaide City Council will change its administrative staff from the State's most inconvenient municipal offices to the most modern. 
Financed from savings in police moiety without necessitating a loan or increased rate, the building is being erected at a cost of £7,380, excluding furnishings and fittings. A street had to be closed and an old paint shop purchased at high price to provide the site.
Rapid progress has been made on the construction, and the Mayor of Port Adelaide (Mr Wright) will lay the foundation stone on Monday. Mr C A Smith won the competition for the design of the new administrative block, which will be a two-story structure housing offices on the ground floor, and council chamber, mayor's parlour, and reception rooms on the second floor.
It will be the first building at Port Adelaide with glass bricks. These are to be incorporated in the curved corners.
 Lawns and shrubs will be laid out in front of the offices, which comprise the first new building on the northern side of St. Vincent Street for 12 years. 

The main object of the building is to house the whole council staff under one roof. At present some offices are in St Vincent Street, and others in Nile Street, and this has caused inconvenience. It is intended after the change-over to convert the offices in the front of the town hall into waiting rooms and an imposing foyer.
