            Some history of the ketch and her ill-fated master.

The wooden two masted coastal ketch ‘Clementina’ was once a vessel owned by the Port Wakefield Shipping Company. 
She was built at Birkenhead SA by McKendrick. In 1922 an auxiliary engine was fitted.  

In 1906, while in the Port Adelaide River, the 'Clementina' was involved in a collision with the steamer ‘Ceres’. She suffered severe damage.
Captain E Thompson, master and owner of the ‘Clementina’, stated she was inward bound from Pine Point with 400 bags of wheat.
Captain Thompson attributed the accident to the ‘Ceres’ having crossed the ‘Clementina’s bows instead of passing astern. Ref: The Register (Adelaide SA) 10-2-1906.

Captain E Thompson, of the ketch ‘Clementina’, was killed at Pine Point, 11 miles south of Ardrossan (SA) on Saturday 24 April.
He was unloading a plough when the gaff broke, and the gin, becoming detached, fell and struck Captain Thomas on the back of the head. Captain Thompson died on the way to the Minlaton Hospital. Ref: Barrier Miner (Broken Hill NSW) 28-4-1909.

Port Wakefield (originally named Port Henry) was involved in shipping large quantities of wheat. 
Wool was another main product: in 1866 it was second only to Port Adelaide for the quantity shipped from South Australian ports.

Between 1836 and 1970 there were some 330 vessels employed in the South Australian coastal trade: 96 of them were ketches.
Small vessels such as these needed the least labour to run them, a crew of three being common.
These vessels were known as The Mosquito Fleet.
