Port Wakefield - Interior of the Wesleyan Methodist Church built 1885: later Uniting Church. South Australia

The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Wesleyan Church in Port Wakefield was successfully carried out on the 15th inst. The day was beautifully fine with a southerly breeze. 
The Rev Messsrs Lane, Read, and Watts, with His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Hogarth and Rumble JP's, Misses Robinson, Hewett, and others, were upon the platform. 
The ceremony of laying the stone was performed by the Rev C Lane, Chairman of the YP District, who delivered an excellent address. 
The friends then adjourned to the old Chapel, where refreshments were provided. After those present had partaken of tea, a public meeting, held in the Foresters' Hall, was presided over by the Mayor of Port Wakefield. 
Interesting addresses were delivered by the Revs Messrs Lane, Read, and Watts, and Miss Lillywhite and Mr Hogarth rendered songs in a pleasing manner. 
The total receipts of the day were £28 15s, making a total of cash in hand towards the building of about £275. The Church will cost when finished about £550.

The opening service of the new Wesleyan Church by the President of the Conference today was highly successful. Two hundred persons were present at the service, and all business establishments were closed for a half-day. People from all parts of the Circuit were at the tea and public meetings. Addresses were delivered by the President and the Revs Messrs Watts and Hillman: and the Mayor (Mr Christmas JP) was in the chair.
