            Qantas Empire Airways Ltd historic hangar.
Construction of the hangar commenced 16 July 1934 for Qantas Empire Airways Ltd (QEA) at Parap, measuring 100ft x 100ft with head clearance of 20ft and doors capable of opening full width to accommodate 4 “Empire mail planes” (de Havilland DH86s).
Sides of the building, running 100ft deep were for offices, storerooms and workshops.
The hangar was constructed in 4 months at a cost of £6,114.

The Ross Smith Aerodrome during the 1930s was Australia’s international gateway, with all flights into Australia having to stop in Darwin. 

Guinea Airways (GAL) leased the hangar from QEA from 24 October 1938, following GAL’s rejection to purchase the hangar from QEA.
The lease to GAL was current to 14 November 1942, when the Japanese bombed Darwin 19 February 1942.
The hangar was badly damaged. The allotment lease was suspended by the Director General of Civil Aviation. The hangar was subsequently repaired and was used by Allied Works Council.

By 1946 the Ross Smith (Civil) Aerodrome was no longer in use following the construction of the RAAF Airfield.
The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) occupied the hangar as a mechanical workshop on 22 August 1946.
12 March 1954 saw DCA purchase the hangar.
By 1980 DCA were using the hangar as an offsite store only.

In 1992, the hangar was listed on the Register of the National Estate and in 1993 on the NT Heritage Register.
In late 1997 the NT Government through the Department of Arts and Museums purchased the hangar from Air Service Australia (formerly DCA).
In 1999, the MVEC (Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club Inc) commenced leasing the Qantas hangar for its headquarters and workshop.

The building houses many permanent displays and annexes house workshops.

The MVEC is the oldest and largest motor enthusiasts club in the Northern Territory with over 400 members most of whom reside in Darwin, Katherine and surrounding areas.
