            Bailliere’s South Australian Gazetteer and Road Guide, 1866 states: Monarto in County Sturt is a central hundred of the county. It consists almost exclusively of pastoral country, and lying in the belt of mallee brush, known as the Murray scrub. 

The settlement is approximately 15km from Murray Bridge, and is established on section 210.
