Heritage listed Fennescey House: now the Adelaide Holocaust Museum & Andrew Steiner Education Centre opened November 2020. South Australia

            The Fennescey name lives on the heritage listed Fennescey House built in 1940 in as an education office for the Catholic Church, on the grounds of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral. 
Of ecclesiastical Gothic Revival the building appears to suggest an earlier date. 

The building now houses the Adelaide Holocaust Museum and Andrew Steiner Education Centre that opened on November 9, 2020.
The education centre was named after Andrew Steiner, an Adelaide Holocaust survivor and sculptor who had been educating school students 
about the Holocaust for 30 years. Steiner drove the museum project, largely funded by Gandel Philanthropy, with the Australian government giving $2.5 million for further development.

The Fennescey Memorial Education Building in St Francis Xavier's Cathedral grounds was blessed and declared open by the Archbishop of Adelaide (Most Rev Dr M Beovich) on Sunday afternoon. Addressing a crowded meeting in the Cathedral Hall after blessing the new building, the Archbishop associated himself with tributes to the generosity of Mr John Fennescey and his wife paid by the Vicar-General (Monsignor M Hourigan) and the Cathedral Administrator (Rev Father C J Thompson) and with them praised the work of Mr H H Jory, the architect, and Fricker Bros, the building contractors. 

The Conference Room of the Education Building was crowded by an assembly which included members of the clergy, members of the Guild for Social Studies and of Catholic social organisations and the general-public, for the occasion of the official opening. 
Present on the occasion were the Master of the Guild (Mr Frank Gillick), the Guild Chaplain (the Rev Fr J P O'Doherty, OP), and the Chairman of the Catholic Central Library (Mr H McEwen), and Mr and Mrs J Fennescey (whose family will always be associated with the Diocesan Education Building erected to commemorate their generosity to the Church in South Australia).

A Fennescey donation of £20,000 to the Church enabled the construction of Fennescey House. 
That donation came from Mary and John Fennescey, who also gave many other large sums to the church. They were successful farmers on Yorke Peninsula. John’s pioneering parents first settled on the Peninsula in the nineteenth century. 
In the 1920s the childless couple sold almost all of their Peninsula properties and retired to Glenelg where they then became closely associated with the church and contributed to the building of Our Lady of Victories. 

Mary died on 23 April 1946 in Calvary Hospital, North Adelaide, where John died on 2 June 1948. Both were buried in the Catholic cemetery at Kadina.
