Part route 16. Lothian 1087 southbound on Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

            Fleet number 1087 was captured on Leith Walk passing McDonald Road Library, one of the more interesting buildings on the Walk. Lothian made some further tweaks to their Covid-19 Critical Service timetable from 17th May 2020 and this included increasing the frequency on the 16 route between Silverknowes and Torphin, which has been running half hourly during the Coronavirus lockdown. Two extra part route journeys have been added every hour Mon-Sat between Silverknowes, the city centre and Morningside. The bus is passing the Brunswick Street junction with the Library and Nelson Hall to the right of the modern building. Opened as the East Branch Library in 1904, it was the third branch public library opened in the city, after the opening of the Central Library in 1890. The building incorporates the Nelson Hall - these were erected with funds from a legacy from Thomas Nelson,junior to provide a place where “....persons of the working class and others can go to sit, read, write, converse and otherwise occupy themselves.” The roadway in front of the modern building is the approximate location of the future McDonald Road tramstop. Pilrig Church, in the distance, is at the former Edinburgh/Leith boundary, while the modern flats before the church are built on the site of the former Shrubhill tram works. The picture was taken on day 57 of the Coronavirus lockdown - the Library has been closed since 20th March during the crisis.
