Vantage point DSC_2143 - a photo on Flickriver

            Just before this image was taken, I was watching Elvis (Red-shouldered hawk) from my living room window.  He was perched in oak two looking towards the ground.  Suddenly, he swooped down to the ground between the tree and the house but I was unable to see what he was after due to plants that were blocking my view.  Then he very quickly flew up and perched on the birdfeeder with nothing to eat.  He sat there while the birds were sounding their alarms and I snapped images.  Then once again, to the ground he went and away with a lizard he flew.  

Elvis seems to be making a habit of perching on the birdfeeder to look for lizards, I guess it gives him a really good vantage point while he surveys the surroundings.  He is also closer to the ground so he can swoop in more quickly and catch his prey.  

I'm not sure what if anything to do about this.  Technically, he is not breaking the rules because he is looking for lizards and such.  And when he is sitting there, the birds are very well aware and although they are loud, they pretty much stay at a very safe distance. Well, except for Dunbar (Northern Mockingbird) he is very brave and does not hesitate to dive bomb Elvis to let him know he is unwelcome.  

Dunbar may be a bit of a bully at the feeders but he sure is a great guardian.  He takes on hawks and crows every time he catches them in the yard.
