Ribbons of smoke

            These smoky strands drifted in from the west a few days ago.  This photo was taken from our deck just after sunset.

British Columbia has been experiencing a particularly hot and dry summer, with many areas, especially in the central and southern interior, reaching daily temperatures in the mid-30's C (high 80's to low 90's F).  We have had occasional stormy skies with dry lightning but little or no rain and wildfires are burning tens of thousands of hectares of forest and grassland, sometimes destroying houses and properties.  At one point 45,000 BC residents were evacuated from their homes, not knowing what they would find on their return.  Strong winds have fanned the flames and hampered firefighting efforts, while spreading plumes of smoke across the southern parts of the province and east into Alberta,  Saskatchewan and even Manitoba.

While acknowledging the destruction caused by the wildfires and the dangers they pose, one can't help but find an eerie and magical beauty in these evening colours.
