Red sun - a photo on Flickriver

Red sun

            It has been -- and continues to be -- a summer of smoky skies that block the sun and throw an eerie, orange light on the land.  In the south and central regions of British Columbia we have been living with burning eyes and itchy throats, dry coughs and congestion for weeks and weeks. . . and there's no end in sight.  Hot days and windy afternoons fan the flames of fires near and far and there's been no rain of any consequence since mid-June.

The only upside to all of this is the sometimes amazing sunrises and sunsets we have been getting.  On this evening the sun was like a burning ember in the sky, a deep pinkish-red ball that slowly dropped to the horizon through a thick veil of acrid smoke.  As it made its way down it seemed to stop for a moment to balance on the tip of this fir tree in the forest west of our home before slipping quietly behind the hazy hills.
