L. emarginatus is very common in central and southern Europe, and from Anatolia to the Caucasus, even in disturbed habitats. It is easily separable from L. niger and L. alienus over part of its range on the basis of color and appendage length, but the 3 spp tend to show convergent variation in the Balkans area, Mediterranean perimeter, and southcentral and eastern Asia.
