Spirit of Tsin.

            The Milky Way rises up behind the West Mitten in Monument Valley with a Juniper Tree in the foreground. 

Tsihn or Tsin in the simplest sense, means tree in Navajo. The Navajo tribe has used juniper ash for many generations as a flavoring in a variety of food products. Additionally, it is used in traditional ceremonies and healing rituals, including a sacred cleansing ceremony.

I was camping at this spot in Monument Valley to shoot the Annular Eclipse as it rose up over the Eastern Mitten from our vantage point. A Navajo Medicine Man blessed us before the eclipse, the ceremony used Juniper Ash and a tea that also had been infused with Juniper I think. 

Seeing the Milky Way rise up over the West Mitten and the Juniper Tree feels spiritual to me. 

Technical Specifics of this photo:

I took the foreground photo at a site during blue hour in the morning near my tent where we where camping, I felt like the blue hour at sunrise would give more definition to the Western Mitt. Unfortunately the Milky Way was obscured by some smoke from a fire in Flagstaff, the night before. The sky photos I took later that night at the Monument Valley Viewpoint.
