A Winter Playground - a photo on Flickriver

            The Milky Way arches over the snow covered hoodoo's in Bryce Canyon during the early morning hours. 

At this time of year the Milky Way starts to creep up over the horizon around 3am. I took this Milky Way arch around 5:30 in the morning just before the sky started to lighten up. 

I always like the look of Bryce Canyon in the winter time with snow covering the red rock, it makes me think of gingerbread covered in icing for some reason. So I made this my first stop in recent road trip, just a few days after they had a dusting of snow. I got my blue hour pano of the foreground that Friday, but the moon was rising with the Milky Way that night, so one week later on my way back home I went back to the same spot and got the Milky Way Arch to blend in  with the foreground shot. 

The term "hoodoo" comes from a Southern Paiute word, oo'doo, which means something that is scary or inspires fear. There are many hoodoo's in Bryce Canyon National Park, every where you look there are interesting formations.
