Aerial view of Levant Arsenic and Ore Dressing Works, Geevor, Cornwall

An aerial view of one of the most dramatic industrial vistas in West Cornwall - the mining remains at Trewellard Bottoms. A century and a half ago this would have been a mass of turning wheels, smoking chimneys, thudding stamps and men, women and children everywhere engaged on the dressing floors.

A group of Brunton arsenic calciners can be seen on the left with the copper solution tanks just beyond above the sea. A short distance to the left from the solitary chimney stack are the copper leaching tanks. The area in the foreground to the right with the concrete pillars is not part of an ancient temple but once housed a battery of Californian stamps.

Around the base of the arsenic works are the tailings works, run for many years by the Rescorla family. Waste from Levant mine settled in the tanks here and last remnants of tin were squeezed out before it went over the cliff into the sea. This was the tail end of the process, hence 'tailings'. When Levant closed, the Rescorlas turned to Geevor's tailings until the mine upgraded its dressing floors in the 1960s, recovering any excess tin, thus putting an end to the Rescorla works.

Pendeen lighthouse can be seen in the far distance.
