Burg Aare - Grauer Turm - a photo on Flickriver

            The castle sits on top of a steep ridge overlooking the small town of Altenahr.
It was built by the counts of Are, first mentioned in historical documents in 1121. In 1245 it came under the control of the Prince-Bishops of Cologne, serving as a stronghold and administrative center.
The castle was destroyed in 1714.
The Grey Tower ('Grauer Turm', on the right) is situated in the upper castle, the oldest part of the castle. Its lower floors served for storage, the upper floors as living quarters. In the center: the chapel; on the left (partially hidden by the tree): the remnants of the belfry.
