The Great Glen from the hills above Lochend.

            Commentary.

Almost a  thousand feet above the north-east corner of Loch Ness, a 180° view, from east to west, takes in views up to 40 miles away including:-
Lossiemouth,
the Cairngorms,
the Monadhliath Mountains
and the south shore of Loch Ness, as far as Inverfarigaig.
Many are surprised at the fertility of the lowland around the Moray Firth, with its deep, dark, loamy soils.
Churned and fertilised for countless millennia by glaciers
and then human agriculture, the moraines and tills brim with high-yield produce.
In this image the outskirts of Inverness is visible, top left.
Loch Dochfour is above middle-left.
Abban Water is centre.
And the narrowed tail-end of Loch Ness is bottom right.
Stringing the latter three together is the River Ness.
Although a mere twelve miles long this superb, clear water, fast-flowing river, renowned for its salmon fishing,
is the prime feature of the Highland capital.
