            Poem.

Oh, mercurial island!
island of mist and mystery,
island of legend and history,
island of mountain and flood,
island of surreal landscape, grandeur and sublime beauty.
The Isle of Skye beckons as we wend our way westwards by train, road or on foot.
This is one of the first views of the “The Winged Isle,” from the southern shore of the fjord, Loch Carron.
It draws us like a magnet, many place-names are iconic and legendary:-
The Black and Red Cuillins, The Fairy Pools,
Kilt Rock, the “Inaccessible Pinnacle” (or In Pinn,)
The Cioch, The Quiraing,
The “Old Man of Storr,” Dunvegan Castle,
Claigan “coral” beaches, Portree,
Elgol and Loch Coruisk.
Most of these places have regularly appeared in fantasy films because they appear so other-worldly.
But the anticipation of just some of them encourages us to venture that bit further.
A bird (above and left of centre,) scans the sea and land for its evening meal as dusk encroaches and Plockton or Kyle of Lochalsh promises us sanctuary, a final resting place for the day before Skye unfurls its mystical magic on our ears, eyes and soul.
Few islands can outclass Skye for its raw, awesome, grand, unspoilt and captivating landscape.
For many, the reality exceeds the promise.
Skye waits for you, to be put under its spell.
