Lairig Ghru Pass from the Spey Valley, east of Aviemore.

            Commentary.

Going south, this mountain pass, at 2,740 feet dominates the Cairngorm Massif
like a giant wedge,
a rocky corridor,
a wild, high, alley-way between natural, mountain bluffs.
Firstly, it linked the Spey Valley, to the north, 
with the Don and Dee valleys to the south of the granite plateau.
Yet this pass, is even loftier than the Drumochter and Lecht Passes, west and east of here.
It was used, as many passes were, by drovers,
to drive their livestock south to the larger markets.
Now its raw, rocky slopes are seen as a challenge
to walkers and mountaineers who want to conquer the highest summits, or simply walk to Braemar or Ballater.
A delight on some spring, summer and autumn days,
it does become a tough, windswept, icy hollow for a large part of the winter.
It makes an awesome backcloth to the miles of pine forest
in Rothiemurchus Forest, this side of the rough and exhausting climb.
The views on both sides are vast and memorable.
The unique wildlife in this semi-Alpine micro-climate
is a further reward for those that venture this far.
