Pallas Athene - a photo on Flickriver

Pallas Athene

Fountain in front of the parliament building in Vienna. Since the central figure, the Greek goddess of wisdom, turns her back on the parliament building, it is often jokingly said that wisdom is not to be found in parliament.

To the left of the column on which the goddess stands, you can see an allegorical representation of the judiciary, to the right that of the executive. The two female figures at the bottom left represent the Elbe and the Vltava. In German, rivers are either female or male, accordingly their allegorical representation: on the other side, not visible in the picture, there are the Danube as a woman and the Inn as a bearded man.
