Het 'Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Hooglede' is een militaire begraafplaats in de Belgische gemeente Hooglede. De begraafplaats ligt in het oosten van het dorpscentrum en er rusten 8.257 gesneuvelde Duitse soldaten uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

In het kader van de honderdjarige herdenking van de Eerste Wereldoorlog realiseerde het architectenduo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh in opdracht van de gemeente Hooglede (BE) een ontvangstpaviljoen voor de Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats.
Het betonnen paviljoen fungeert als ontvangstinfrastructuur die – afhankelijk van de kijkrichting – verschillende fragmenten van de omgeving omkadert. Het paviljoen is geïnspireerd op de klassieke boogarchitectuur, die ook te zien is in de historische Erezaal van de begraafplaats, maar presenteert ook een nieuwe interpretatie van deze historische architectonische volkstaal.
Gijs Van Vaerenbergh sneed zes diagonale gewelven onder verschillende hoeken uit een enorm volume van 9x9x5m. Een complexe gewelf- en kolommenstructuur met verschillende vormen en afmetingen bepalen de overdekte ruimte. Een overgedimensioneerde kolom herbergt een subtiel geïntegreerde toiletruimte.
Elke gewelfde ruimte omlijst een ander fragment van de omgeving: de begraafplaats, het omliggende landschap en de volkstuinen aan de andere kant. Maar afhankelijk van de kijkrichting kadert het paviljoen ook fragmenten van zichzelf in. Hierdoor ontstaat een picturaal boogspel in de boog dat de manier waarop het lichtspel de gewelven beïnvloedt naar voren brengt. Het paviljoen fungeert daarmee als een soort kijkmachine die zichzelf en de omgeving op de voorgrond plaatst.
De vloer rond het paviljoen is opgevat als een ruimtelijke installatie die de wens weerspiegelt om van de entreezone een ruimte te maken die functioneert als een belangrijke aanvulling op de algehele enscenering van de begraafplaats. Een donker betonnen oppervlak werd gedeeld door een breukpatroon, dat verwijst naar het gebroken en zwartgeblakerde landschap ten tijde van de oorlog. Op strategische plekken zijn diverse betonfragmenten verwijderd om ruimte te maken voor groen en beplanting. Het landschapsontwerp is in samenwerking met LAMA landschapsarchitecten gerealiseerd.

The 'Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Hooglede' is a military cemetery in the Belgian municipality of Hooglede. The cemetery is located in the east of the village center and contains the graves of 8,257 fallen German soldiers from the First World War.

In the context of the centennial commemoration of World War I, the architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh was commissioned by the municipality of Hooglede (BE) to realize a reception pavilion for the German Military Cemetery.
The concrete pavilion functions as a reception infrastructure that - depending on the viewing direction - frames different fragments of the environment. The pavilion is inspired by classical arch architecture, which can also be seen in the historic Honor Hall of the cemetery but also presents a new interpretation of this historical architectural vernacular. Gijs Van Vaerenbergh cut six diagonal vaults at different angles out of a massive volume of 9x9x5m. A complex vault and columns structure of varying shapes and dimensions define the covered space. An over-dimensioned column accommodates a subtly integrated lavatory space.
Each vaulted space frames another fragment of the surroundings: the cemetery, the surrounding landscape and the allotments on the other side. Yet, depending on the viewing direction - the pavilion also frames fragments of itself. This creates a pictorial play of arc in the arc that brings to the fore the way the play of light affects the vaults. As such, the pavilion functions as a kind of viewing machine that brings both itself and the environment to the fore.
The floor around the pavilion was conceived as a spatial installation that reflects the wish to make the entrance zone a space that functions as an important addition to the overall staging of the cemetery. A dark concrete surface was divided by a fracture pattern, which refers to the broken and blackened landscape at the time of the war. Various concrete fragments were removed at strategic locations to make space for greenery and planting. The landscape design was realized in collaboration with LAMA landscape architects.
