"imbocca poi il sentiero percorso la notte prima e si dirige al fiume, mentre il cielo promette una giornata serena all'incerto chiarore lunare e l'alba proietta una luce rossastra sull'orizzonte, disegnando un paesaggio assai diverso da quello cui il giovane è abituato tra le sue montagne. Percorre nuovamente la strada della sera prima, ridendo tra sé per il terrore ispiratogli dalle piante che ora gli sembrano innocue, e alla fine raggiunge la riva dell'Adda"
