Aigrette Garzette (Egretta garzetta)

L'Aigrette garzette est une des espèces de petits hérons au plumage blanc immaculé présentes à travers le monde. Mais chez elle, le morphe sombre est extrêmement rare. Comme toutes les aigrettes, elle présente un corps élancé et élégant. Le bec noir est une véritable dague. Il est long et fin, très légèrement incurvé vers le bas. Les lores (1) sont de couleur variable suivant l'état physiologique. En période inter-nuptiale, ils sont de couleur jaune à verdâtre, en phase avec l'iris lui même jaune. Mais en période de reproduction, les adultes nicheurs voient leurs lores virer au rose bleuté ou au violet. Les longues pattes noires sont munies de doigts jaunes, exceptés chez les sous-espèces d'Océanie où elles peuvent être toutes noires, ou alors avec le sole jaune. Lors de la reproduction, des plumes ornementales apparaissent, filiformes à l'arrière de la tête, plumeuses et duveteuses au bas du cou, à l'arrière du bras et sur le dos, participant au plumage nuptial spécifique. Ce sont ces plumes particulières qui ont valu à ces oiseaux le nom générique d'aigrettes.

The Garzette Isw is one of the species of small herons with pristine white plumage found throughout the world. But in her, the dark morph is extremely rare. Like all egrets, it has a slender and elegant body. The black beak is a real dagger. It is long and thin, very slightly curved down. Lores (1) vary in colour depending on the physiological state. In the inter-nuptial period, they are yellow to greenish in colour, in tune with the iris itself yellow. But during breeding season, nesting adults see their lores turn bluish pink or purple. Long black legs have yellow fingers, except in oceania subspecies where they can all be black, or with yellow sole. During reproduction, ornamental feathers appear, filiform at the back of the head, feathery and fluffy at the bottom of the neck, back of the arm and on the back, participating in the specific bridal plumage. It is these particular feathers that have earned these birds the generic name of egrets.
