P1200063 Ferry to transport traffic over the Rio Panuco, Tampico, Mexico 1975

            The Panuco River was flowing out of its banks during the fall due to tropical storms that went ashore up and down the Gulf Coast. Water taxis - outboard motorboats which ran across the river to Tampico and back carrying paying passengers heaved and rolled on the strong river currents. The strong currents flowed down out of the highlands to the west which had received the bulk of the rainfall carried inland by the tropical systems, filling the watersheds with more water than they could absorb and the overflow streamed out into the Gulf of Mexico at Tampico, on the north side of the river.  Crossing by water taxi was an ordeal that was not relished by those who depended upon the boats to get them to the city and back. The river carried an abundant load of vegetation and storm debris as it flowed to the Gulf a few miles downstream: logs, whole trees, Water Hyacinth and mats of vegetation adding to the difficult passage.

Our return trip from Guatemala. Today the river is spanned by a new suspension bridge beautifully designed.
