One of four photos of artwork from signage belonging to the old Royal Hotel on the former Mother Road (Route 66). They were taken in November 2017 with a crappy little camera off a tiny ObamaPhone.

The Royal was demolished in 2007 but two hotel signs at the site were not. This apparently happens regularly, leading to creation of Friends of the Orphan Signs (FOS). Since 2010 they've sponsored art and poetry on these and other 'Burque remnant business signage.

This neon artwork was called Revivir and was the first major FOS project, standing from 2012-'19. It was created with and by Highland High School students. More info is here.

For most of us, art dressings like these switched out from time to time at the Royal over the years were a mystery – Thank you to flickr member Heidi Utz for sharing the story with one of her Royal pictures, which enlightened me.

This entire 4100 block on Central Ave NE has long since (July 2023) been covered up by the Broadstone Nob Hill Apartments, part of relatively recent gentrification.
