Un glaneur de charbon perdu dans ses pensées

Dhanbad (Inde) - contrairement à ce qui vient à l’esprit en voyant ce portrait, l’homme ne pose pas. Je l’avais photographié un peu plus tôt et là, il avait pris la pose.

Puis j’étais passé à autre chose. Lui aussi. Un peu plus tard, agenouillé sur un tas de charbon, alors que je photographiais de face un groupe d’hommes et de femmes en file indienne, portant des paniers de minerai sur leur tête, cet homme est repassé à portée d’objectif, sans me prêter la moindre attention. J’ai instantanément compris qu’en étant au ras du sol, je tenais peut-être là un angle intéressant. Au moment où il allait me dépasser, j’ai pivoté au prix de véritables contorsions, le genou toujours au sol et j’ai déclenché. Etant donné ma position au moment ou j’ai pris la photo, je n’ai pas eu le temps de contrôler si mon cadre était ou non de travers. Coup de chance j’étais de niveau. Ça tient même du miracle. En tout cas, contrairement à ce que l’attitude de ce glaneur de charbon pourrait laisser penser, il s’agit bien d’un instantané. Mais je le soupçonne d’avoir su que je le photographiais.

Then I moved on to something else. Him too. A little later, kneeling on a pile of coal, while I was photographing from the front a group of men and women carrying baskets of ore on their heads, this man came back within camera range. He seemed not to see me. I instantly realized that being low to the ground gave me an interesting angle. As he was about to pass me, I pivoted with real contortions, my knee still on the ground, and I fired. Given my position when I pressed the shutter button, I did not have time to check whether or not my frame was crooked. Luckily I was level. It's even a miracle. In any case, contrary to what the attitude of this coal gleaner might suggest, this is indeed a snapshot.
