Das unter Denkmalschutz stehende zweigeschossige gotische Gebäude ist eines der ältesten Rathäuser in Mitteldeutschland und geht in seinem Kern bis auf den Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts zurück. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung ist aus dem Jahr 1310 überliefert. Der Bau des Rathauses erfolgte am Kreuzungspunkt zweier Handelsstraßen.

Das Gebäude präsentiert sich als Werksteinbau. Es ist 25 Meter breit und 17 Meter hoch. Zum Teil ist es verputzt. Die östliche Außenwand des Rathauses steht, dem Verlauf der dort auf den Markt einmündenden Breiten Straße folgend, schräg zum Gebäude. Bedeckt wird das Rathaus von einem steilen Satteldach. Die Fassade des Rathauses ist üppig mit Efeu bewachsen. Charakteristisch für das Erscheinungsbild des Gebäudes sind auch die traditionellen Blumenkästen vor den Fenstern, die ursprünglich dem Anbau von Kräutern zwecks Luftverbesserung in den Amtsstuben dienten.
