Mute Swan - Cygnus olor (Gmelin, JF, 1789) - Knobbelzwaan

            The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan and a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae. It is native to much of Eurosiberia, and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa. It is an introduced species in North America – home to the largest populations outside of its native range – with additional smaller introductions in Australasia and southern Africa. The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species. Measuring 125 to 170 cm (49 to 67 in) in length, this large swan is wholly white in plumage with an orange beak bordered with black. It is recognisable by its pronounced knob atop the beak, which is larger in males.

Knobbelzwanen broeden in wilde staat in een groot deel van Europa en verspreid in Azië. Daarnaast wordt de soort veel in gevangenschap gehouden, als parkvogel voor de sier of voor vlees en dons. Hoewel tamme Knobbelzwanen al vele eeuwen door mensen worden gehouden, heeft geen domesticatie plaatsgevonden. Ook in Nederland komen al erg lang geleewiekte en dus tamme Knobbelzwanen voor. Pas sinds de jaren dertig van de 20e eeuw broeden er weer wilde exemplaren in ons land, nakomelingen van geleewiekte zwanen die zich vermengd hebben met wilde soortgenoten uit het buitenland (Scandinavië, Oostzeegebied). Momenteel zijn alle Nederlandse Knobbelzwanen als wild te beschouwen, tenzij ze duidelijk in gevangenschap worden gehouden. Knobbelzwanen zijn planteneters die vooral leven van cultuurgras en waterplanten. Het grote, van plantenmateriaal gemaakte grondnest - vaak op een opvallende plek - wordt soms jarenlang gebruikt. Knobbelzwanen zijn hoofdzakelijk standvogel en hebben een monogame paarband. Broedparen verdedigen het gehele jaar hun territorium. Niet-broedvogels zwerven in groepen rond en verzamelen zich voor de slagpenrui.
