High Park Burn [3;30 mins] - a photo on Flickriver

            The High Park Traditional/Prescribed Burn 9 Apr 2024.  High Park, Toronto ON.  The park contains the Toronto region's largest tracts of black oak savanna, a continentally-rare ecosystem.  It is based on well-drained sand and gravel soils, where summer drought inhibits most of the Carolinian forest species, but black and white oaks, with their deep taproots cand survive.  It is an ecosystem in which fire plays a role.  If the area is not burned, then other Carolinian species tend to come in and crowd out the oak saplings.  To renew the oak woodland, it needs to burn.  In recent years this has been undertaken as a joint project between the city and local indigenous folk.  It has become one of the moments where Toronto's various treaty peoples share the care of the land.
