Arcadia Valley bathed by a Smokey Sunset

            This area, the Arcadia Valley, is not often visited by me, though I did have opportunity in my younger years to explore the area. I crossed the range in the background on foot and also explored the spectacular gorges that streams have cut through these sandstone ranges. It is awesome country when up close, but even this panorama reveals another level of beauty.
Geologically we are looking at an eroded anticline. The valley has been the centre fold of the anticline and therefore streams through time have eroded the valley. The clifflines of the bounding ranges (Expedition Range on the east pictured here; Carnarvon Range to the west) are composed of beds of sandstone (Precipice Sandstone and Evergreen Sandstone principally). The retreating scarps in the sandstone are frequently vertical, being controlled by the jointing. While there are streams that drain the valley flowing accordantly, they have tributaries that flow from the plateaux to the Arcadia Valley slicing awesome gorges into the ranges. 
Then there is the Dawson River. The Dawson River on the other hand is not accordant but runs transverse to the whole anticlinal structure. As an antecedent river flowing transversely, the Dawson cuts across the valley and dissects both the Carnarvon and Expedition Ranges. Its gorges are also spectacular, too.
