Australian Light Penetrates the Scruffy Australian Bush

            Passing mountain ash (Eucalyptus Regnans*) on the track up to Badger Creek Weir in the water catchment hinterland of Melbourne.

After the founding of Melbourne, settlers spoke of its “Greek” or “Alexandrian” light. Greek is better, because Melbourne and Athens have the same absolute latitude, but there is less often a Mediterranean haze. Strong sunlight is not always easy to photograph in though -- but we do get enough cloudy days to make it worthwhile to own a camera...

* Devastating bushfires of 2009 destroyed the then tallest known surviving mountain ash on mainland Australia. ("Ashes to ash.") One stood at 91.6m (301ft). In Tasmania, there is one of 100.5m. In the 19th century there were estimates of felled Victorian instances at 120m and higher, but the tallest claim now granted plausibility was 114m, which would have allowed the tree to look the currently largest Californian redwoods in the eye. You get the idea, Eucalyptus Regnans can be quite big trees. (San Francisco is on the same latitude too, so perhaps something about this zone favours tall trees...)

In August 2022, an Australian television programme determined this species to be "Australia's favourite tree".  The program was interesting, but the puerile presentation in Reality TV style was irritating.
